Sudden cardiac arrest, particularly from coronary heart disease, remains one of the commonest causes of death in the UK and many such deaths occur outside the hospital. All healthcare professionals who work in the community may be required to resuscitate a victim of cardiopulmonary arrest.
Cardiac arrest is a common and treatable cause of premature death. The earlier that effective treatment is provided, such as basic life support and defibrillation, the more likely the patient is to survive. Every minute that a victim is without a defibrillator, their chance of survival drops by 12%.
All healthcare professionals in the community who have contact with patients should be trained to resuscitate patients who suffer cardiopulmonary arrests. The minimum standard should be proficiency in basic life support.
